The Maui High Performance Computing Center said it chose an International Business Machines supercomputer to help the U.S. Air Force identify lost objects hurtling toward earth from outer space. The order is part of a $10 million contract awarded to IBM to upgrade the center’s supercomputing facility, said the associate director of the Maui, Hawaii-based center. IBM’s new SP supercomputer will allow the center to quickly transform blurry images taken with a telescope into sharply focused motion pictures. The Air Force can then figure out if something is a foreign spacecraft, a discarded satellite – or an unidentified flying object.
