“Fancy Free”, which Jerome
Robbins choreographed when he was only
24, looks as smart today as it did half a
century ago. That’s the very definition of a
classic, and he created many. When he died
last week in New York at 79, after a stroke,
he left an extraordinary range of work, from
his handsome and provocative ballets to the
choreography that transformed Broadway.
Born in New York to Russian immigrant
parents, Robbins studied chemistry for a
year then quit to dance. By 1948 he had
choreographed six ballets and four
Broadway shows, and a year later he
became co-artistic director of the New York
City Ballet (NYCB) under George
Balanchine.
Racing back and forth between the
classics and showbiz, he enriched both.
Robbins choreographed 15 musicals,
including “The King and I”, “Gypsy”,
“Fiddler on the Roof” and the greatest of all
Broadway shows, “West Side Story”.
In 1995 he reworked the latter into a
suite for the NYCB. The choreography
blazed all over again, the company had its
biggest hit in years, and a new generation
discovered the man who made dancing look
like America.
