A preposition is “A function word that combines with a noun or pronoun or noun phrase to form a prepositional phrase that can have an adverbial or adjectival relation to some other word” (definition from Wordweb 2.0 Freeware Version dictionary).

Ou seja, uma preposição é “uma palavra de função (funcional) que combina-se com um substantivo ou pronome ou frase nominal (o substantivo, o pronome ou a frase nominal que são antecedidos pela preposição são o objeto da preposição) para formar uma frase preposicional (ou sintagma preposicional; LUFT, 1991) que tem uma relação adverbial ou adjetiva com alguma outra palavra”.
